Autumn piano lessons in Marbella are beginning again as summer draws to a close on the Costa del Sol and families return to Marbella, San Pedro and Estepona for a new teaching season.
It has been a delightfully busy summer.
Alongside a packed schedule of live performances, I have been teaching students of all ages and levels — from beginners at the piano to musicians exploring Logic Pro and music production. Several summer students took the opportunity to move into Logic Pro lessons, developing their recording, arranging and production skills alongside their musicianship.
There was another particularly enjoyable development this summer. Some of my regular online students, who normally study with me from abroad, travelled to Marbella for their holidays and came to my studio for lessons in person.
After working together across a screen during the year, suddenly sitting at the same piano is a rather nice change.
Now autumn is approaching, and I am looking forward to welcoming returning students — and meeting new ones.
Whether you are starting piano for the first time, returning after a long break, preparing for an exam, developing as an experienced player or learning to produce music in Logic Pro, September is an excellent time to begin.
Modern Piano Lessons — Built on Real Musicianship
I have never believed that learning the piano should simply mean progressing through one book after another.
Good piano teaching should build musicians.
That means developing technique and reading skills, but also understanding chords, rhythm, harmony, phrasing and how music actually works.
My students play classical music, jazz, rock, pop, blues and film music. Depending on the individual student, lessons can include improvisation, chord voicings, comping, playing by ear, sight-reading, left-hand bass and contemporary keyboard techniques.
For complete beginners, everything starts from the foundations and develops step by step.
For intermediate and experienced pianists, lessons can go considerably further into harmony, interpretation, improvisation and the practical skills needed for playing with other musicians, performing or recording.
The programme is always one-to-one and built around the person sitting at the piano.
ABRSM, RSL and Structured Exam Preparation
Not every student wants to take exams. For those who do, a recognised qualification can provide an excellent structure and a clear musical goal.
I prepare students for ABRSM, Trinity and RSL examinations, adapting the preparation to the requirements of the particular syllabus and the student’s strengths.
I also work with GCSE and A-Level music students who need individual support with areas such as piano performance, theory, composition and music technology.
Exam preparation should be thorough, but I don’t believe an exam syllabus should become a student’s entire musical education.
The objective is not only to pass the next grade. It is to develop the technique, understanding and musical independence that remain useful long after the exam is finished.
Piano Meets Logic Pro
One of the fastest-growing areas of my teaching is Logic Pro and music production.
This summer provided a particularly good example, with several students moving from instrumental work into recording, arranging and production.
Logic Pro lessons can cover MIDI, audio recording, editing, arranging, mixing and the practical workflow involved in developing an idea into a finished piece of music.
For singers, songwriters, pianists and young producers, the connection between keyboard skills and production can be especially valuable.
The piano provides an immediate way to understand chords, melody and harmony. Logic Pro provides the environment in which those ideas can be arranged, recorded and developed.
You do not need to be an advanced pianist before learning music production, either. The two sets of skills can develop alongside each other.
From Online Lessons to Lessons in Marbella
Marbella has an unusually international community, and my students increasingly reflect that.
Some live here throughout the year. Others divide their time between Spain and another country. I also teach students entirely online.
This summer, several students who normally have their lessons with me online travelled to Marbella and were able to continue their lessons in person at my studio.
It worked in exactly the way modern music tuition should work.
A student can study with me in Marbella, continue online while abroad and return to face-to-face lessons when back on the Costa del Sol. There is no need to interrupt the programme simply because geography changes.
For international families, adult students who travel frequently and students who divide their time between countries, that flexibility can make a considerable difference.
Professional Music Experience in the Teaching Studio
There is another important part of how I teach: I am still a working musician.
I have more than 30 years of professional experience in music and have taught more than 500 students.
My background includes a Diploma in Band Leading and Musical Direction from Rytmisk Center in Copenhagen, where I also taught, professional studio and production work, and more than 15 years performing internationally as a headline musician with Royal Caribbean.
Today I continue to work as a pianist, musical director, producer and live performer.
This summer has been a perfect example: teaching during the week, working with Logic Pro and music production, and regularly heading out to perform live.
That professional experience inevitably comes into the teaching studio.
Timing, listening, preparation, harmony, sound, communication, improvisation and performance are not abstract subjects to me. They are things I continue to use professionally.
For students, that means structured tuition backed by practical musical experience.
Autumn Piano Lessons for Children, Adults and Complete Beginners
Autumn is traditionally one of the busiest times for new students, and beginners are very welcome.
Children can develop technique, reading, rhythm and musical understanding through a structured programme adapted to their age and progress.
Adults often arrive with very different objectives. Some are returning to an instrument they played many years ago. Some have always wanted to learn. Others already play but want to break through a plateau or explore a different style.
There is no requirement to read music before your first lesson and no requirement to follow an examination syllabus.
For experienced players, lessons can be equally focused: improving improvisation, harmony, voicings, accompaniment, reading, repertoire or the practical keyboard skills needed for performance and production.
The starting point is your current ability. The programme develops from there.
One-to-One Lessons in Marbella, San Pedro and Estepona
My teaching studio is in Bel-Air, conveniently situated between San Pedro and Estepona and easily accessible from the wider Marbella area.
Lessons are available in the studio, online and as home lessons across Marbella, San Pedro and Estepona.
All tuition is individual.
That allows me to teach a seven-year-old beginner, an adult returning to piano, an exam candidate and a songwriter working in Logic Pro very differently — as they should be.

Yes. I teach children and adults from complete beginner level through to intermediate and experienced players. Previous musical experience is not required.
